Five years ago, on this very day, we published our first post at A Gentlemanly Sport, and today we celebrate 5 Years of Blogging! Without any grand plan to be honest. We simply wanted to share our enthusiasm for miniature wargaming, painting, terrain building, and the stories that emerge from games played with friends around the table. I never imagined the journey the blog would take us on.
Humble beginnings
Over the past five years, the site has grown into far more than a collection of battle reports, with, from today’s perspective, mediocre pictures and pretty much no text. Hence, it’s become a record of our projects, completed or left unfinished, experiments that succeeded, and some that didn’t. Along the way we’ve explored historical, fantasy, and science fiction gaming, reviewed miniatures and rulesets, shared painting techniques, and documented the creative side of our hobby that keeps us all coming back.
The greatest reward, however, has been the community. Every comment, email, and conversation at events has reminded me that this hobby is built around a shared passion. Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or discovered the blog only recently, you’ve helped shape what A Gentlemanly Sport has become.
What I learned
Blogging since 2021, has taught me a lot. I became better at writing, better at taking pictures, and simply better a telling a story. Blogging (more or less) consistently for five years hasn’t always been easy. Life, and in my personal case, raising a little man, has a habit of interrupting hobby time. Thus, there were moments when the next post felt a long way off. But every return to the painting desk or gaming table brought fresh inspiration and another story worth telling. After all, we’ll soon hit the 200 posts mark!
As we all know, blogs, in the age of Instagram, YouTube and podcasts, are an antiquated form of content creation. But, to be honest, I think, posting your thoughts and ideas on a blog has something more permanent then a video or a podcast episode that quickly disappears from view in an online space mainly driven by endless feeds and algorithms. Personally, I really enjoy writing and taking pictures of my projects, games and ideas. It’s something I do in other aspects of my life too.
Now, as I look ahead, there are still armies, or at least some minis, to finish, terrain to build, campaigns to fight, and new games to discover. The hobby stays, but also continues to evolve, and I’m excited to keep exploring it with all of you.
