After LUXCON 2025 concluded, A Gentlemanly Sport is looking back at its first “official” attendance at a major event. And as it turned out, it was a lot of fun!
We hosted several demo games of One Page Rules Grimdark Future Firefight (OPR GFF), Age of Fantasy Skirmish (OPR AoFS) and small scale games of One Hour Wargames (10 mm Ancients and 6 mm 7 Years War) at this years LUXCON. We even managed to add a small board for battle tech. But as we said, One Page Rules (OPR) was the main gig.
Everything starts with a plan…
As newbies, we decided to keep it simple and easy. Hence, we decided to demo the skirmish sized games of One Page Rules (OPR).
One Page Rules
Since were were organising demo games for OPR, we had to adapt several elements of the game to fit our small tables and to keep our games at the 30 minutes mark.
- First we reduced the board size to 2 x 2 feet in order to allow for faster games.
- We chose simple, generic and relatable 150 points warbands : Goblins, High Elves, Human Empire, Battle Brothers, Alien Hives and Dwarf Guilds.
- We decided to set aside the advanced rules, in order to not overcomplicate things.
Catch their eye
As it turned out, our spot at LUXCON 2025 was prime property for miniature afficionados, located right next to the stairs leading up to our floor. Our neighbors, from Germany, were showcasing Trench Crusade, the new hot contender in the wargaming world, on a magnificent 3D board.
Eric organized a fancy banner with the club logo, niche graphics and a QR code, leading to this very humble blog.
In order to further attract people, we used props, like books on war, a decanter with ice tea, as a proxy for whisky, as well as some of mine and Eric’s excellently painted miniatures.
What we learned
As mentioned above, LUXCON was our debut at presenting at a convention. But as Gérard, the main man of LUXCON, pointed out: everyone is a beginner at first and there is an obvious learning curve for that kind of activity.
What we expected and what we got
Truth be told, we did not know what to expect and went in with what we had, and an open mind.
What surprised us, were the many questions regarding wargaming in general.
Most of the people, familiar with our hobby, knew it through GW products like Warhammer Fantasy (for the “older” generations) or 40K. It was nice to introduce them to other game systems than good old James’s Workshop.
Those unfamiliar with the games we tend to play, were asking questions like “How does it work?” or “What games do you recommend if I want my kid to get into it?”. Besides, we received lots of compliments, especially regarding our miniatures.
The reactions on our demos were equally diverse and refreshing.
One gentleman saw in our 6mm demo of “One Hour Wargames” an opportunity to familiarize his son with historical battles, and a very precise Persian one in particular…
Several LUXCON attendees, who used to play the big name systems many moons ago, saw in OPR an opportunity to dust off their old minis and to get back into the hobby again.
A particular duo of video-gamers transferred their competitive thinking from the digital world to the analogue gameboard and had a blast at “One Hour Wargames”.
However, the most surprising reaction from our visitors, was that they expected us to sell something. But, our goal, as wargaming ambassadors, was simply to introduce them to this wonderful hobby of ours.

Final thoughts
The interaction with visitors was inspiring, meaningful and fun. Being able to chat with other people about our passion and answering their questions was genuinely refreshing. The interest in One Page Rules was particularly satisfying. In conclusion, A Gentlemanly Sport at LUXCON 2025 proved to be a resounding success.
Small scale historical rank and file games were unexpectedly popular. Consequently, we decided to add this format more prominently in future events.
We’d like to thank the ORGA team of LUXCON 2025 and the SFFS Luxembourg yet again for inviting us.
